About West Coast of Tasmania and Strahan Accommodation

Nature lovers will love Strahan and we have loads of Strahan accommodation to suit all budgets. Of all our Strahan accommodation The Aldermere Estate is probably our favourite and they have two bedroom apartments if you're on a family holiday.

Strahan is located on the Macquarie Harbour and was firstly known for one of Australia’s most dreaded penal settlement until Port Arthur was opened in the 1830’s.
Strahan then prospered during the west coast mining boom of the late 19th century, when ore was transported to its port along the Abt Railway from Queenstown. The Abt Wilderness Railway operates between Strahan and Queenstown and is one of the world’s best railway journeys.

Strahan unpredictably shot to fame in the 1980’s as the centre for the Franklin River Blockade. The powerful hydroelectricity authority attempted to construct several dams when protestors successfully put a stop to the project. Gordon River Cruises based in Strahan takes visitors into the well-known Tasmanian World Heritage Area.

Tasmanian Wilderness

The Tasmanian Wilderness covers the entire southwest region of Tasmania. It contains mountain ranges, buttongrass plains and unpolluted rivers. Unusual landforms have been created by glaciers or slow moving sheets of ice duing several ice ages. It is difficult for people to get to the area, so much of the Wilderness is pristine.

It has one of the few remaining large areas of temperate rainforest in the world and provides habitats for numerous animal and plant species.
