Southern Tasmania and Hobart Accommodation

About Hobart and Hobart Accommodation

Hobart is Australia’s second oldest and most southerly city, built around a beautiful harbour and close to majestic Mount Wellington.

Hobart’s deepwater harbour on the broad estuary of the Derwent River became a thriving seaport in the 1840’s and now has suburbs right up to the lower slopes of Mount Wellington and on both sides of the graceful Tasman Bridge.

From the bridge you will see Government House and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens set in the Queen’s Domain, a large parkland with sporting facilities.

Richmond Bridge

Richmond Bridge crosses over the Coal River in Richmond, 20 kilometres northeast of Hobart. It was built in 1823 by convict workers and is Australia’s oldest bridge. Six arches support the stone bridge. The bridge was an important engineering feat in its day, connecting Hobart to the southeast of Tasmania.

Salamanca Place

Salamanca Place is a row of waterfront warehouses built in the 1800’s in Hobart. They are the best remaining example of sandstone warehouses in Australia. The warehouses were built over a 25-year period. They vary in height but similar materials and details on the buildings blend them together. Today, Salamanca Place is the setting for Hobart’s arts and crafts market.

Port Arthur - Arthur Highway

The impressive Port Arthur Historic Site was created with convict labor during the 1800’s. Its architecture and delightful gardens as well as chilling prison facilities survive today for all to explore.

Port Arthur is located 60 km south east of the state capital, Hobart and was named after lieutenant governor George Arthur. The settlement started as a timber station in 1830, but was soon turned into a penal colony. From 1833 until 1877 when the prison closed, it was the destination for the hardest of convicted British and Irish criminals and those who were secondary offenders having re-offended after their arrival in Australia. Devastating fires tore through the area in 1895 and 1897 gutting the old prison buildings, leading to the establishment of a new town.

Tourists can either explore the site for themselves or participate in guided tours, or even a late night ghost tour. There is also a museum containing written records, tools, clothing and other information from convict times.
