When you visit Tasmania you have to meet the famous Tasmanian Devil. They are fascinating creatures and for that reason it is worth sharing some Tasmanian devils facts:

Where do Tasmanian Devils live?

Tasmanian devils nowadays can only be found in Tasmania. You should be able to see them across the plethora of National Parks across the island. There is evidence that over 400s years ago Tasmanian devils used to live on the Australian mainland.

What do they look like?

That’s right. They look a little bit like this. You were lied to through cartoon as a kid if you think Tasmanian devils look like Taz above.

Devils are predominantly black but have white markings on their chests. Adult male devils are generally bigger than their female counter parts. They usually stand at around 30 centimetres (or 12 inches) tall at the shoulder and weigh close to 12 kilograms.

Fully grown devils have an abnormally large head that is somewhat disproportional to their bodies.

What is a Tasmanian Devil?

A Tasmanian devil belongs to the marsupial family of animals.

How Vicious is a Devil’s Bite?

Whilst devils aren’t dangerous to humans they do possess a vicious bite. A bite that has 4 times the power than a large dog.

Are Tasmanian Devils Endangered?

In recent times, 2009, Tasmanian Devils became an endangered species under the Commonwealth’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. In certain areas more than 90% of the population has been wiped out. the reason for their rapid decline is the Devil Facial Tumour Disease, a cancer that spreads between devils. You can see what it looks like below:

Tasmania is home to a number of passionate conservations and wildlife enthusiasts who are trying to ensure the plight of Tasmanian Devils. You can visit a number of wildlife parks across Tasmania and see all the efforts being made.

Where can you see Devils in the flesh?

As mentioned they are a number of places across Australia where you can see the Tasmanian Devils in the flesh. One such place is located in Taranna not too far out of Hobart. You can see their info below.

Ferry to Tasmania

Whilst you can fly to Tasmania, you can also take the ferry to Tasmania.  The Tasmania ferry is known as the Spirit of Tasmania and travels between Melbourne and Devonport. The obvious advantage of taking the ferry as opposed to flying is that you can take your car or vehicle with you. Having a car, camper or any other form of transport in Tasmania is great for getting around. The driving in many places is incredible. Take the ferry option and you don’t need to pay for vehicle rentals and have the comfort of your own car.

Information about the Ferry to Tasmania

How long does the ferry take?

The trip takes approximately 9-11 hours depending on sailing conditions and scheduling.

How often does it go?

On certain days there is a single trip and on certain days there are two trips.

When do you sail?

You can choose between taking a night ferry or a day ferry. During summer months taking a day ferry can be a great option with spectacular scenery and plenty of space to explore and relax. Going down the night ferry route is also a great option too. Travel from Port Melbourne and see this great Australian city by night.

How much does it cost?

The cheapest fare for a car on board is from $79 each way during low season. The price rises during high season and also depends on the size of your vehicle. Cars with campers or trailers over 7m can expect to pay more.

Is there accommodation on board?

9-11 hours is a long time to be on board if you want to relax and have some privacy. In light of this, you can book recliners or cabins to enjoy your crossing the most.

Image: Birds eye view over Hobart from your plane

You can choose to fly to Tasmania as a more time effective and often more cost effective mode of transport than the spirit of Tasmania ferry.  You can fly to Tasmania from many mainland capitals with Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide being the most popular and most frequent routes. Planes touch down in Hobart, Launceston and Davenport many times a day.  Tasmania is primarily serviced by 4 main airlines. If you are flying to Tasmania you can decide between these following options.

JetStar

Jetstar is one of a host of low cost carriers that provide cheap flights to Tasmania. They operate regular flights from both Sydney and Melbourne and fly into the state capital Hobart and the second city Launceston.

Virgin Blue

Another option for cheap flights to Tasmania is Virgin Blue. Similarly to Jetstar, they offer a service to Hobart and Launceston from Sydney and Melbourne.

Tiger Airways

If you want to get a direct flight from Adelaide then Tiger Airways is the low cost carrier for you as it offers service 4 days a week from the South Australian state capital. It also offers similar services to Virgin Blue and Jetstar listed above.

Qantas

The more expensive option compared with the low cost carriers.  There are daily flights into Hobart from Sydney and Melbourne and flying into Launceston, there are daily flights from Melbourne. You can also take a Qantaslink flight that will get you into Davenport.

To fly to Tasmania is really easy. There are multiple services throughout the day and a number of different airlines mean you can usually get a cheap flight. If you book a flight to Tasmania in advance (I just checked 3 months in advance) you could find yourself flying to Tasmania for as little as fifty bucks.

Where to Stay once you Fly to Tasmania?

If you touch down in either of the two main cities then you might want to check out the extensive range of Hobart accommodation and Launceston accommodation available to you, including hotels, holiday rentals, bed and breakfasts and more. If you are thinking about finding some accommodation in Strahan, then you’ve made an excellent choice. Strahan is not only located on arguably one of the best islands in the whole of Australia, but it is also a place stooped in many aspects of Australia’s history…

It first shot to fame as a notable historical landmark  for the dark times of Australia’s penal colonies pre-dating Port Arthur which opened in the 1930s. Towards the end of the 19th century Strahan was one of the major towns associated with the mining boom in the West of Tasmania. To this day you can enjoy one of the best railway journeys in the world being the old mining route from Strahan to Queenstown.

If that wasn’t enough Strahan and the rest of the south-west then shot to fame for one of the most notable and successful environmental victories in Australia’s history – the Franklin River Blockade of 1983. For thousands of Australians the protection of the Franklin as one of the few “wild” rivers in the world was paramount and it even became very much on the agenda in the federal elecction. To see more on the blockade watch the video below:

Strahan is a key factor in ensuring that the Franklin is still “wild” today. If you get the chance to and are adventurous enough on your Tasmania or Strahan, then you should do a 3 day white water rafting trip down the Franklin river and see exactly why  wanted to save it so much.

The scenery surrounding Strahan is breathtaking and most people will explore it in two ways: 1) a trip on a Gordon River cruise (or alternatively a kayak if you’re game) or 2) on the wilderness railway. Strahan village, itself is a small piece of paradise on earth and was voted the “best little town in the world” by The Chicago Tribune. Whether you find yourself in a quaint pub on the strip or a more fancy restaurant there’s sublime seafood whereever you turn.

So how should find the best Strahan accommodation?

Finding Accommodation in Strahan

With it’s rich history and modern day tranquility, it’s hardly surprising that Strahan, despite only having approximately 650 residents, is a burgeoning tourist hotspot with a host of accommodation options. You can take your pick of Book Tasmania‘s extensive range which can suit the style you’re after and also a range of budgets.
